What Ahrefs Does Exceptionally Well
1. Backlink Analysis — The Industry Gold Standard
Ahrefs' backlink database is widely considered the best in the industry. It updates every 15-30 minutes with fresh links, has the largest active index, and the Domain Rating (DR) metric is the most commonly cited authority score in SEO. Competitor backlink analysis in Ahrefs is genuinely useful — enter a competitor's domain, filter by "best links" (sorted by DR), and you have a prospecting list for your own link building.
Real test: We analyzed a SaaS blog with ~800 referring domains. Ahrefs identified 94% of known backlinks (verified against Google Search Console). SEMrush found 89%. For link-building focused SEO, that 5% gap matters.
2. Content Explorer — The Hidden Gem
Content Explorer lets you search a database of billions of pages by topic, filter by organic traffic, referring domains, or social shares, and find content that's already proven to perform. 3. Site Audit — Fast, Thorough, Actionable
Ahrefs' Site Audit crawls up to 100,000 pages (on Advanced plan) and scores every issue by importance. Unlike some audit tools that overwhelm you with 1,000+ "warnings," Ahrefs prioritizes well — you'll see 10-20 critical issues, not 500 minor ones. Each issue comes with a "How to fix" guide that's practical, not theoretical.
4. Keywords Explorer — Multi-Platform Research
Unlike SEMrush (Google only), Ahrefs covers 10 search engines: Google, YouTube, Amazon, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, Yandex, Daum, Naver, and Seznam. If you're doing video SEO (YouTube) or ecommerce (Amazon), this multi-platform capability is unique and valuable.
Where Ahrefs Falls Short
1. No Free Tier Whatsoever
Ahrefs offers zero free access. Not even limited queries. The cheapest way to try it is the $29 "Ahrefs Webmaster Tools" (AWT) — but that only covers sites you own (verified via GSC) and has very limited features. For competitive research, you must pay at least $99/month. Compare to SEMrush (10 free queries/day) or SEO Brief Generator (3 free briefs/month, forever, no credit card).
Who this hurts: Solo bloggers, freelancers, and small businesses testing the SEO waters. $99/month is a significant commitment before you know if you'll use it.
2. No Built-in Content Optimization
Ahrefs tells you what keywords to target and how competitors rank — but it doesn't help you optimize your content. There's no content editor, no content scoring, and no AI writing assistant. 3. No PPC Research
Ahrefs is purely SEO-focused. No Google Ads research, no display advertising data, no PPC competitor analysis. SEMrush covers both SEO and PPC in one platform. If your marketing mix includes paid search, you'll need SEMrush (or a separate PPC tool) alongside Ahrefs.
4. Learning Curve (Especially for Beginners)
Ahrefs is powerful but dense. The interface assumes you know SEO terminology — DR, UR, KD, traffic value, referring domains vs backlinks. New users often feel overwhelmed. The onboarding is minimal, and there are fewer educational resources than SEMrush's Academy.

Ahrefs is the best backlink analysis tool on the market, full stop. If links are a core part of your SEO strategy, the $99/month is worth it — the link data quality alone will pay for itself in better link-building decisions. Content Explorer is a genuinely unique feature that no competitor matches well.
